The world faces a great number of challenges, from the immediate Covid-19 pandemic and the more long-term – but no less urgent – climate crisis and ecological breakdown, to growing inequality, insecurity, and social polarisation. The ideas of yesterday no longer provide the solutions for the problems we face today. As a result, we are living through a twice-in-a-century change in economic thinking and policy making, also known as a paradigm shift: we are moving away from neoliberal market ideas and a focus on narrow economic growth, towards an economy centred on enhancing human wellbeing in a sustainable, equitable and resilient way – also known as the Wellbeing Economy.
Think Tank of Young Economists
The Think Tank of young economists, of the Future Markets Consultation led by former Dutch Prime Minister prof. Jan Peter Balkenende and prof. Govert Buijs, has investigated how we can move towards the Wellbeing Economy. The young economists, Sam de Muijnck, Elisa Terragno Bogliaccini and Jim R. Surie, furthermore explored what the paradigm shift means for the public sector, financial sector and environmental policy.
On April 12th 7 pm (CET), they will present the report and receive a short reaction from Jan Peter Balkenende at an online event organized in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger. After this, there will be a panel discussion with distinguished young economists from different European countries. The event closes with the award ceremony of the essay contest for students and young scholars of the Future Markets Consultation.
In the panel
Philippa Sigl-Glöckner is the director of the German economic think tank Dezernat Zukunft. Previously she worked as an economist for the German and Liberian Ministries of Finance, the World Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank.
Amanda Janoo is the Knowledge and Policy Lead for the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll). Amanda worked for the United Nations and the African Development Bank. As a Fulbright researcher, she explored the relationship between international trade and informal employment.

Op naar de welzijnseconomie
De wereld heeft te maken met een groot aantal uitdagingen, waarbij Covid-19 de meest actuele is maar, zeker niet minder urgent, hebben we ook te maken met een klimaatcrisis, ecologisch verval, groeiende ongelijkheid, onzekerheid en sociale polarisatie. De ideeën van gisteren zijn niet langer voldoende om deze hedendaagse problemen op te lossen. Dit resulteert in een noodzakelijke verandering in ons economisch denken en handelen; beter bekend als een paradigmaverschuiving. In deze veranderingen laten we het traditionele neoliberale marktdenken los, waarbij economische groei en winstmaximalisatie centraal staat en bewegen we naar een een economie waarin het welzijn van mensen in een duurzame, gelijkwaardige en veerkrachtige manier centraal staat. Dit noemen we een welzijnseconomie.
Denktank van jonge economen
Een denktank van een selecte groep jonge economen heeft, onder leiding van voormalig minister-president prof. Jan Peter Balkenende en prof. Govert Buijs onder de naam ‘Future Markets Consultation’ onderzocht hoe we de transitie naar een welzijnseconomie kunnen maken. Deze jonge economen, Sam de Muijnck, Elisa Terragno Bogliaccini en Jim Richard Surie hebben hierin specifiek gekeken naar de publieke sector, klimaatbeleid en de financiële sector.
Op 12 april om 19:00 (CET) presenteren zij hun uitkomsten live in Pakhuis de Zwijger te Amsterdam aan Jan Peter Balkenende tijdens een webinar. Na deze presentatie zullen een aantal uitgekozen jonge economen uit diverse landen ingaan op de uitkomsten. Tot slot zal er een uitreikingsceremonie zijn voor de essaywedstrijd die gehouden is onder studenten en jong-werkenden onder 35 jaar.
In het panel
Philippa Sigl-Glöckner is de directeur van de Duitse economische denktank Dezernat Zukunft. Eerder werkte zij als econoom voor de Duitse en Liberiaanse ministeries van financiën, de Wereldbank en de Deutsche Bundesbank.
Amanda Janoo is de Knowledge and Policy Lead voor de Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll). Amanda werkte voor de Verenigde Naties en de Afrikaanse Ontwikkelingsbank. Als Fulbright-onderzoeker onderzocht ze de relatie tussen internationale handel en informele banen.
